I remember when I taught Chicago’s only Wednesday morning yoga class! Tantric sex is where yoga was 25 years ago--rare…kind of hard to find a teacher, mentioned only in whispers at dinner parties, and not, well...normal. It’s edgy, a bit misunderstood, and just beginning to break into the mainstream.
A combination of yoga, meditation, and breathing, tantric sex is so much wilder, wetter, and far more unpredictable than the sum of its parts. Imagine how thrilled I was to find out that two of my favorite things--yoga and sex!--were united in a practice called "tantric sex." What a great way to meditate! We have had thousands of years of mixed messages about sex. And there are many definitions of tantra. Put them together and it’s fertile ground for misunderstanding and disagreement. So read on:
Today when people hear the word 'tantra' often they think "sex." But ‘tantra’ means loom—a device for weaving. Tantric practices provide ways of weaving the Divine with the physical, and the paths of tantra embrace all—literally, everything that exists--as Divine. Because of the many paths that are all called “tantra,” it is not easy to define it in a way that all its practitioners (not to mention scholars) would agree with. For me, tantra simply means everything is Divine—including our sexuality. Some but not all tantric paths embrace sexuality as a path toward expanding consciousness. In my practice and transformational lineage Tantra Heart and Ipsalu Tantra www.tantrabliss.com, tantric sex means sacred sex. It means being lit up within—by the Divine, not by someone else.
Yoga has long encouraged practitioners to repress sexual energy. But in the flowering of human consciousness, human sexuality is NOW ready to be reclaimed and used as a tool for awakening. This is the energy that creates life itself!
